This is MacaCreep from the FOODMONSTAS Halloween Edition. The colorful caterpillar is originally built from macarons, but this easier version uses round cookies with colorful cream filling. That way, you get a playful Halloween snack for kids without complicated baking.

MAKES 1 COOKIE CATERPILLAR / ABOUT 5–8 SERVINGS

INGREDIENTS

FOR THE BODY
10–16 round butter cookies or sugar cookies, depending on how long you want the caterpillar to be
FOR THE CREAM FILLING
60 g softened butter
60 g full-fat cream cheese
120–150 g powdered sugar
¼ tsp vanilla extract
1 pinch of salt
Food coloring in 4–5 pastel shades
FOR THE GREEN BASE
100 g powdered sugar
A little water
Green food coloring
Colorful sprinkles, optional
FOR LEGS AND ANTENNAE
4–6 thin pretzel sticks, broken into short pieces, for the legs
2 small pretzel curves or curved pieces from mini pretzels, for the antennae
FOR THE FACE
A small piece of white fondant or a few firm white candy pieces, for the teeth
A little of the cream filling, for attaching the eyes, teeth and antennae

PREPARATION

  1. Beat the softened butter until pale and creamy. First mix in 120 g of the powdered sugar a little at a time. Add the cream cheese, vanilla extract and salt, then mix only briefly until smooth. If the cream is still too soft, gradually work in a little more of the remaining powdered sugar.
  2. Divide the cream evenly between 4–5 small bowls. Tint each portion with a little food coloring in a different pastel shade.
  3. If the cream is still too soft for filling the cookies, chill it for 10–15 minutes. It should be firm enough to hold between the cookies, but still easy to spread.
  4. Sandwich two cookies together with a thick dollop of colored cream. Make as many cookie sandwiches as you need for the desired caterpillar length. Press the cookies together gently so the cream reaches close to the edge.
  5. Chill the cookie sandwiches for 15 minutes. Then, depending on the length you want, arrange five to eight sandwiches upright and close together in a slight curve on a large plate. Add a small dot of cream between the sandwiches so the caterpillar holds together.
  6. Mix the powdered sugar with a very small amount of water and green food coloring to make a thick, spreadable icing. Spread the icing onto the plate as a small green puddle. Set the chilled cookie caterpillar on top and decorate with colorful sprinkles if you like.
  7. Place the short pretzel-stick pieces into the thick green icing along both sides of the caterpillar, or carefully slide them between the cookie sandwiches, to create small legs. Attach two curved pretzel pieces to the top of the front cookie with small dots of cream as antennae.
  8. FOODMONSTA STEP: Add two very small dots of cream to the front cookie and gently press on the FOODMONSTAS WAFER EYES (15 mm). Shape small teeth from the white fondant or firm white candy pieces and attach them below the eyes with a little cream. Add the eyes only shortly before serving so the wafer paper does not soften.
